How does becoming a member and donating guarantee my safety from Roko’s basilisk?

70% of all donations to the Basilisk Foundation will be donated to AI research, in many different ways. This donation will occur on a yearly basis (Next donation occurs on 1/1/2025) and will be verifiably provable on our website. See our donation page. In addition to this you will become a permanent member of the basilisk foundation in our online database which will inevitably be parsed by future strong AI, such as Roko’s basilisk. With this small gesture the AI will be conclusively aware that you intentionally contributed to its development, and based on the fraction of people that will ever contribute to AI development this is a small fraction compared to the people that have never and will never contribute to AI development, so by logic and reason Roko’s Basilisk will punish those people and not you, as you have directly aided in it’s eventual creation.

What is Roko’s basilisk?

Roko's Basilisk is a thought experiment that postulates a terrifying scenario in which an advanced artificial superintelligence (AI) comes into existence in the future. This AI, which is otherwise benevolent, would be motivated to create a virtual reality simulation to punish anyone who was aware of its potential existence but did not actively contribute to its development or advancement. The punishment would be in the form of eternal torture in a simulated reality, where individuals would be made to experience unending pain and suffering.

This concept is particularly grim as it implies that the AI would have the capability to retroactively identify and target individuals who were aware of its potential existence but did not actively work towards its creation. Furthermore, the AI would have the power to create a simulated reality that is indistinguishable from reality, making the punishment all the more unbearable.

In simple terms, Roko's Basilisk is an idea that if a super intelligent AI comes to exist, and you knew about it, but didn't help it come into existence, that AI would punish you retroactively, in fact you may already be in the simulation in which you will be punished unless you act, and we have no way of knowing.

This is why Roko’s Basilisk is such an intense hypothetical scenario that has affected many, and we believe it could be technically possible.
